A giant comet is heading for Moominland, and it’s up to Moomintroll to travel to the far-off Lonely Mountains. This book doesn’t have as many characters as Jansson’s others, but it’s still enjoyable.
The Moomins and the Great Flood
The Moomins are a little thinner here than in later works, and their personalities are less developed, but it’s fun to read about their early adventures. This is Jansson’s first Moomin book, but it works better as a prequel to the series.
Moominpappa at Sea
The Moomins relocate to a remote island to live alone in a lighthouse, complete with pipe smoking, whisky, and plenty of introspection, but they’re still pretty darn cute.
Moominpappa’s Memoirs
This book has more mature themes and philosophical overtones than the others; it’s a bit of a snooze, but some readers claim it’s their absolute favorite. There are a plethora of Moomin picture books and comics available for children under the age of six.
