Sidney Sheldon (February 11, 1917 u2013 January 30, 2007) was an American writer, director, and producer whose 18 novels have sold over 300 million copies in 51 languages, making him one of the top-10 best-selling fiction writers of all time.

Early life

He was born in Chicago and sold his first poem for $5 when he was ten years old. During World War II, he served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps but was forced to leave due to injuries.


Sheldon won a Tony Award for his musical Redhead, starring Gwen Verdon, in 1959, and his other stage plays include Alice in Arms and The King of New York. He established a reputation as a prolific writer, having three musicals on Broadway at one time.


Sheldon J. Sheldon won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1947 for The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, and his other writing credits include South of Panama, Gambling Daughters, and Fly-by-Night. He was also one of the screenwriters for the 1948 musical film Easter Parade.


Sheldon created, produced, and wrote I Dream of Jeannie, starring Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman, in 1965; he wrote all 17 episodes of Nancy, a short-lived series, in 1970; and he created and wrote Hart to Hart, starring Stefanie Powers, in 1979.


Sheldon was the author of 18 novels that have sold over 300 million copies and featured strong women who persevere in a harsh world ruled by hostile men. He was dubbed “Mr. Blockbuster” and “Prince of Potboilers” by the Los Angeles Times.

Personal life

Sheldon married Alexandra Joyce Kostoff, a former child actress, in Las Vegas in 1989. Before that, he was married to Jorja Curtright, who played Suzanne in the 1955 film Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing, and their daughter, Mary Sheldon, went on to become a novelist.

Sheldon was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1988, and had a Golden Palm Star dedicated to him on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars in 1994. In 1990, he received the American Academy of Achievement’s Golden Plate Award.
