Over the next few weeks, we’ll be publishing a list attempting to define a discrete decade, in which I’ve chosen books that, when read together, would provide a fair picture of literary culture for that decade. For our seventh installment, we’ve selected 10 books that defined the 1960s.
Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique ignited the women’s movement in 1963, and Alvin Toffler calls it “the book that pulled the trigger on history.” Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood was one of the first of its kind, and a blockbuster of the New Journalism movement.
