The Bible
The Bible is the Christian religion’s holy scripture, and it tells the story of the Earth from its beginnings to the spread of Christianity. Both the Old Testament and the New Testament have undergone numerous revisions over the centuries, with the King James Bible being published in 1611 and adding a number of new books.
Old Testament
The Old Testament is the first section of the Bible, and it covers everything from the creation of the world to Noah and the flood. The earliest known mention of the Jewish god Yahweh is in a 9th century B.C. inscription about Moab, and it’s thought he was adapted from the mountain god Yhw.
Hezekiah
According to historians, the books of Deuteronomy and Judges were compiled during the reign of Josiah in the 6th century B.C., with scribes recording royal history and heroic legends.
Septuagint
The Hebrew Bible was translated into Greek in the 3rd century B.C. after Alexander the Great conquered Egypt. This Greek translation, known as the Septuagint, was initiated at the request of King Ptolemy of Egypt and was the version of the Bible used by early Christians in Rome.
New Testament
The New Testament, which was written about 40 years after the earliest written Christian materials, the letters of Paul, tells the story of Jesus’ life and the early days of Christianity. Historians believe that some books attributed to Paul were actually written by disciples and imitators.
The Gospels
The four Gospels were published anonymously, but historians believe they were given the names of Jesus’ disciples to provide direct links to Jesus. The first book, Mark, was written around 70 A.D., 40 years after Jesus’ death, followed by Matthew and Luke.
Book of Revelation
The Book of Revelation is the last book of the Bible, and it prophecies a final celestial war. It was written around 95 A.D. on an island off the coast of Turkey, according to the text. Some scholars believe it is more of a response to the Roman destruction of Jerusalem than a prophecy.
Biblical Canon
Different councils issued lists to guide how various Christian texts should be treated, according to documents from the 4th century. The first known attempt to create a canon was made by Marcion in 2nd century Rome, but it was not until the 5th century that all of the Christian churches came to a basic agreement on Biblical canon.
Gnostic Gospels
Gnostic Gospels include the Gospel of Thomas, which purports to be previously hidden sayings by Jesus, and the Book of Judas, which is thought to contain secret conversations between Jesus and his betrayer Judas, which were discovered in Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in 1945.
King James Bible
The King James Bible, first printed in 1611, was commissioned by King James I in 1604 with the goal of uniting religious factions through a common holy text.
