Paul Zindel, Jr. was an American playwright, young adult novelist, and educator who lived from May 15, 1936 to March 27, 2003.

Early life

Zindel was born in Staten Island, New York, to a police officer and a nurse, and wrote his first play in high school before going on to study chemistry.


He wrote The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds in 1964, which won him the 1971 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and was adapted into a 1972 film directed by Paul Newman and starring his wife Joanne Woodward.

Personal life and death

Paul Zindel, who was married to Bonnie Hildebrand from 1973 to 1998 and had two children, Lizabeth and David, died of lung cancer in New York City in 2003 at the Jacob Perlow Hospice in Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan.


Other titles include Let Me Hear You Whisper, 1969, and Amulets Against the Dragon Forces, 1989[5], as well as The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, 1967, and Ladies at the Alamo, 1977.
