Which John Scalzi Novel Should I Read First?
“I write nearly all of my books to be read as stand-alones,” Scalzi says of his books, adding that if he had to choose just one, it would be “Old Man’s War.”
Old Man’s War is probably the best book for most people to start with, with The Ghost Brigades and A Agent to the Stars rounding out the top three. The Last Colony is book three in the Old Man’s War series, written with the idea that people picking it up might not have access to the other books.
The Dispatcher is better read in conjunction with The Human Division. Imitation is a crime noir with a fantasy wash, and it’s a bit off the beaten path from what I’m known for. Miniatures is a collection of very short stories, most under 2,000 words. The Collapsing Empire is the first installment of my new space opera titled The Collapsing Empire.
