Deborah Ellis
Deborah Ellis CM OOnt (born August 7, 1960) is a Canadian novelist and activist whose work frequently deals with the plight of persecuted children in the developing world.
Early life
Ellis was born in Trinidad and Tobago’s Port of Spain and raised in the United States; she began writing when she was 11 or 12 years old and has been writing ever since.
Career
Ellis wrote best-seller I Am a Taxi, which tells the story of a Bolivian boy whose family is accused of smuggling coca paste. In 2008, she published Lunch with Lenin and Other Stories, a collection of short stories about the peace movement and anti-war movement.
Honor
Ellis was made a Member of the Honourable Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (CHILWI) in December 2016. He was named to the Order of Ontario in 2006 and received a Governor General’s Award for his body of work.
