History
Founders Ken Gjemre and Pat Anderson opened the first store in a former laundromat in 1972, and Sharon Anderson Wright is the current President and CEO, with Ellen O’Neal taking over as Chairperson of the Board in 2009.
Philanthropy
Half Price Books’ mission statement is to “promote literacy while being environmentally conscious.” The retailer donates millions of books and overstock inventory to non-profit organizations, as well as some of its books to Better World Books, a for-profit online bookseller.
Publishing
Half Price Books publishes some of the books it sells, and its publishing arm, Hackberry Press, reprints non-copyrighted titles. Proceeds from the series Say Good Night to Illiteracy are donated to family literacy organizations.
Wholesale
Texas Bookman, based in Dallas, is Half Price Books’ wholesale division, which sells trade and scholarly remainders at discount prices to wholesale buyers all over the world, and will begin selling directly to the public on their new retail website in April 2020.
