Quick Answer: What # Paper Should Adult Coloring Books?

How To Choose The Right Paper For Coloring

One of the most underappreciated aspects of a coloring design is the paper on which it is printed. In this blog post, you will learn about three different types of paper, when they should be used, and how this will affect your coloring book purchasing decision.

Printer Paper

Because printer paper is designed primarily for one purpose: printing documents, it does not handle markers or water colors well and will bleed through, so we recommend coloring on this paper with pencils and using gel pens with caution.

Bleed Proof Paper

Because bleed proof paper captures the ink from markers and prevents any jagged edges from forming, you can use alcohol-based markers, which take longer to dry but lay down a nice flat color (without that annoying overlapping dark line).

Watercolor Paper

It’s much thicker than printer and bleed proof paper, and it’s made to soak up watercolor paints and all the ink from markers. The texture of this paper can add a very nice sophisticated touch to your water based colorings.

Coloring Book Paper

Most coloring books use standard printing paper for their designs, but our Creatively Calm books use some of the industry’s thickest paper, allowing us to print our designs back to back while still being able to use a medium like markers, which won’t bleed through our paper.

Doing Your Own Printing

There are numerous websites where you can find free coloring designs; however, doing your own printing allows you to print the same design multiple times; if this sounds more appealing to you, visit our website for a year’s worth of coloring designs for free!

Vignette backgrounds are a great solution for smaller designs with some, or a lot, of complexity because they allow you to add that extra touch of color without having to fill out the entire page, and they’re also a great place to add some shading for an even better effect.

A blank background allows you to create even more realistic coloring. Many colorists use shading to transition their work from a 2D image to a 3D scene. To do so, choose a focal point and base all of your shadows on that point.

Because of how seamlessly watercolor blends together, it’s a great medium for creating beautiful backgrounds. However, you should only use watercolors on paper that can handle it; otherwise, the paper will become soggy and wrinkled.

Don’t Add A Background

Backgrounds are great additions to designs with complexity in the edges, but not so much when there is a solid perimeter. A simple design that does not have a uniform simple edge like a circle can benefit and lend itself well to a background.
