Success in books: a big data approach to bestsellers
We model the temporal changes in book sales as well as the level of engagement between publishers and readers using a computer program.
Bestsellers reach their sales peak in less than ten weeks
We have at least two years of sales data for the 2035 fiction bestsellers. Peak sale values vary significantly from book to book. Almost all books peak in the first 15 weeks after publication. For nonfiction, peaks at weeks 2u20135 are common, but they can happen at any time after that. Exogenous events such as awards and endorsements can cause late peaks in sales.
Sales follow a universal pattern
Most books have a similar sales pattern, with peaks in the first ten weeks and troughs after that, thanks to three fundamental mechanisms. Our model can accurately predict how many copies a book will sell during its lifetime months after publication, with the fit derived from the first 25 weeks resulting in fairly accurate predictions for total sales for most books.
According to Nielsen BookScan’s analysis of the year’s best-selling books, the majority of bestsellers fall into the Suspense and Mystery genres combined in fiction, or the Biography/Memoir and History genres in nonfiction. The popularity of genre fiction has been steadily increasing since 2011.
