Book vs. TV: The Magicians
The Magicians is a trilogy of novels written by Lev Grossman and adapted for television by SYFY. There are significant differences between the books and the TV series. The Magicians is one of the sexiest, most enjoyable writing experiences I’ve ever read. Other characters take center stage, and there are entire storylines that don’t involve Quentin in the least.
The Magician King is the best of the three novels in my opinion, but the TV adaptation is superior in almost every other way. It’s as if Grossman couldn’t handle the complexity of creating strong female characters, and the problem is exacerbated when you consider how male characters are treated. Grossman writes like a male feminist who will have any woman’s back, but when they start working together, it’s as if he can’t handle the complexity of creating strong male characters.
