Although the era of great physiology textbooks appears to be over, we can still learn a lot from them. In this article, I revisit Ruch and Patton’s Physiology and Biophysics, and then move on to three more Great Textbooks from the past 40 years.
General Physiology Hugh Davson
Hugh Davson’s General Physiology was published in single volumes in 1951 and two volumes in 1970. How did he write such a book? By reading and summarizing the results of original papers for thousands, if not tens of thousands, of hours.
Principles of Human Physiology Ernest Starling
The 14th edition of Sir Charles Lovatt Evans’ Principles of Human Physiology (PHP) is considered the final edition; E M Killick, in reviewing the 12th edition, stated that medical students find it difficult to read. Davson’s Principles of Human Physiology was a great reference book; Rushton’s chapter, ‘Nerve Fibres,’ is still worth reading today.
Medical Physiology Vernon B Mountcastle
The 14th and final edition of ‘Medical Physiology,’ first published in 1918 and edited for many years by Philip Bard, was published in 1980, with 1999 pages plus 72 pages of index, and provided a detailed account of those aspects of physiology useful to medical students and doctors.
