Question: What Books Is Bladesinger 5e In?

What is this guide?

This guide is a deep dive into the Wizard Subclass, the Bladesinger. We use the following color rating scheme for our full class guides: Orange is an OK option, Green is a good option, Blue is a great option, and Sky Blue is an amazing option.

What is a Bladesinger?

Bladesingers are adept at both spell and swordplay, and while they are primarily wizards, they can also deal decent melee damage. Bladesingers are useful for a variety of tasks on the battlefield, including crowd control, damage, and diverting enemy attention away from your weaker party members.

Bladesingers are a unique take on the Wizard class that are a blast to play. Bladesingers can easily boost their AC into the 20s, and when combined with some defensive spells and great mobility, the Bladesinger can easily whip around the battlefield untouched, opening up some very interesting ways to build and play.

Bladesingers are cool, but they’re not the most powerful or well-optimized Wizard subclass; you’ll need a high DEX score in addition to INT for AC and attack bonuses, and casting spells or cantrips is still usually preferable to attacking with a weapon.

Even non-elf races can become Bladesingers, though most races and subraces are limited by the DM’s setting and source material. Variant Humans are good for Bladesingers because they get INT and DEX boosts as well as a free feat from level one.

Choose a background that works well with other Wizard builds and comes with INT or DEX proficiencies. Acolyte: Insight and Religion proficiency. Cloistered Scholar: History and Arcana, Nature, or Religion proficiency. Sage: History and Arcana, Nature, or Religion proficiency.

Ability Scores

Wizards rely on INT for everything, and INT bonuses pump you in additional ways with the Bladesinger’s features. Allocating stats correctly is crucial to making the build usable.

1st Level

In melee situations, Intelligence and Wisdom saves aren’t going to help much, and Wizards have the worst hit dice in the game (a d6). Bladesingers have a high INT score but will struggle to boost their CON to compensate for the lack of hit dice.

2nd Level

The Bladesinger is distinguished from the other Wizard subclasses by his proficiency in light armor and a one-handed melee weapon. Studded Leather isn’t quite as effective as Mage Armor, but it saves a spell slot and a prepared spell for something more useful.

6th Level

Extra Attack allows you to substitute a cantrip for one of your attacks; Booming Blade or Green-Flame Blade can be combined for two attacks per round, and you can also fire a Fire Bolt at an enemy far away from your original target.

10th Level

Song of Defense is another way to keep your squishy Bladesinger alive in a fight against Frostbaker and his Frosty Backslash. If an incoming attack would cut through your Shield spell, this will at least reduce the damage to your Bladesinger.
