Little Golden Books
The Poky Little Puppy, Scuffy the Tugboat, and The Little Red Hen are just a few of the well-known titles from the Little Golden Books series of children’s books, which ran from the 1930s to the 1950s.
History
Georges Duplaix, the head of Artists and Writers Guild Inc in 1940, came up with the idea for the shared-printing book while working on new children’s books.
The first 12 titles were printed in September 1942 and distributed in October, after the group calculated that if each title’s print run was 50,000 instead of 25,000, the books could be sold for 25 cents each. Three editions totaling 1.5 million books were sold out in less than five months.
Writers and illustrators
Margaret Wise Brown, Kathleen N. Daly, and Elizabeth Orton Jones are just a few of the well-known authors and illustrators who have contributed to Little Golden Books.
Contemporary art
The “Golden Book Gown,” a fairytale-inspired gown made almost entirely of Golden Books, was unveiled by Ryan Jude Novelline in 2010. It featured a 22,000-square-inch page-turning skirt and a form-fitting bodice made entirely of spines.
