FAQ: What Is A Pa In Books?

The Best Books

Please see the best review books page for recommended PANCE and PANRE prep books. These pocketbooks should last you for years if you don’t lose your short white coat.

Tarascon Pharmacopoeia

Tarascon is still my go-to source for prescribing after 14 years, and I wouldn’t leave home without it. Although I switched to the iOS app after PA school, I still recommend the small pocketbook to all of my students.

Sanford Guide to Antimicrobial Therapy

Grab a copy of the Sanford Guide, which is chock-full of information that goes far beyond antibacterial treatments, and spend 30 minutes getting to know it.

Maxwell’s Quick Medical Reference

I used this daily during my PA school rotations and stashed it in my desk after graduation. It’s a great quick guide to SOAP notes, notes for surgery or OB-GYN, quick reference to review of systems and physical exam, as well as a handy visual acuity eye chart and other great quick reference info.

Costanzo Physiology provides straightforward, easy-to-understand explanations of some of the most complex physiologic processes, and Osmosis! Anatomy Coloring Book is my go-to web application.

Clinical Guidelines in Family Practice, which was recommended to me by a Nurse Practitioner, is the one book I would recommend above all others, and Differential Diagnosis in Primary Care, which I use weekly in the clinic setting, is a close second.

Davis’ PA Exam Review is published by PANCE PREP PEARLS.

Andrew Rodican’s original Ultimate Guide to Getting Into PA School is still the best, but How to Write Your PA Personal Statement is a great companion read. I’ll also shamelessly plug my book: How to Write Your PA Personal Statement.

I used them mostly as an adjunct while studying for my end or rotation exams, but they were also a valuable tool for PANCE preparation. Check the publication year before purchasing on Amazon; there tend to be several options, with different publication years, and some require updating.

The University of Washington in Washington, D.C. publishes the Washington Manual, Tarascon Hospital Medicine, Blueprints Medicine, and Saint-Frances Guide.

If you’re thinking about going on a medical mission trip, here are some books to read to broaden your global medical perspective: Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder is my all-time favorite, and it’s a great place to start if you haven’t already.

My Big List of Books

Some are about medicine, while others are about personal finance or social justice; the majority are non-fiction, but some are fiction as well.

Medical Books That Will Make You a Better Person and Provider

Reading helps you grow mentally, emotionally, and psychologically because every book allows you to learn new things and explore new ideas. Choose a book from the list below and make it a goal to read at least one new book every month.

Functional and Integrative Medicine

As diabetes, heart attack, and stroke rates rise, we must do more than stand by and learn about the benefits of a whole-food, plant-based diet and how it can affect your health and that of your patients. My favorite book on this list is Michael Greger’s How Not to Die.

Social Justice

Building a Social Business by Muhammad Yunus will keep your mind spinning for days, and A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah is one of the best books I’ve ever read. These are all great reads on how you can impact the world while creating something sustainable.
