Oxford World’s Classics
Oxford World’s Classics is an imprint of Oxford University Press, founded in 1901 by Grant Richards and purchased by OUP in 1906. Its competitors include Penguin Classics, Everyman’s Library, and the Modern Library.
Grant Richards
Grant Richards, a London publisher, founded the World’s Classics imprint in 1901, and Henry Frowde, the manager of the Oxford University Press, bought the series in 1905. Many volumes included introductions by notable authors such as T. S. Eliot and Virginia Woolf.
Present day
Many existing titles are reprints of texts established by the earlier Oxford English Novels series, with revisions to the critical material; some of these titles have since been updated with new introductions and notes by different editors. The Oxford World’s Classics series was launched in paperback format in 1980.
Oxford English Drama
The Oxford English Drama editions include a selection of plays from an author’s u0153uvre, as well as glossaries of archaic words for Renaissance, Restoration, and eighteenth-century plays. Scholar Anne Barton praised the series as a “splendid and imaginative project.”
Major works
Major Works are mini-anthologies of an author’s most important works and selected correspondence, with some editions including entire novels. For example, the Major Works edition of Oscar Wilde includes many of his plays and prose, as well as the entire novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. The majority of the titles are reprints of volumes from an earlier Oxford series.
