FAQ: Skyrim What Are The Seven Black Books?

Black Books

Black Books are Daedric Artifacts attributed to Hermaeus Mora found in The Elder Scrolls V: Dragonborn. There are seven different Black Books scattered throughout the ruins of Solstheim, many of which can be found through the repeatable quest “Lost Knowledge.”

Black Books are Daedric artifacts created by Hermaeus Mora to entice mortals into his service, containing hidden knowledge that grants the reader great power. Some appear to be from the distant past, while others appear to be from the distant future.

Opening a Black Book transports the reader to a region in the realm of Apocrypha; Black Books can only be read while in Solstheim; if used while doing something like wood chopping or sitting down, a message appears that says, “You are unable to concentrate.”

The achievement “Hidden Knowledge” is earned by unlocking the secrets of five Black Books. The edge of each Black Book can be activated to return to Solstheim; only one from each area can be active at a time, but the Dragonborn can return at any time.

Mora’s Agony: Summons a field of writhing tentacles that poisons enemies. Secret of Arcana: Spells don’t drain magicka for 30 seconds. Seeker of Might: 10% more effective combat skills, 10% better Smithing.

The Sallow Regent is most likely a reference to Robert Chambers’ The King in Yellow. While exploring Solstheim, a Black Book can be used as a portable storage container. It is useful to dump heavy loot there while exploring, then return it when near a merchant/permanent storage.

If a Lurker stomps on a Dragonborn, they can be flung into the air like a Giant, and when they respawn in Solstheim, they can become unresponsive, walking into the ground, or laying on their side. The only known fix is to load a previous save. Sneaking or dashing inside a moving tunnel causes Dragonborn to fall through the moving object abruptly and usually die due to the hazards below.
