History of Folio Society Books
The Folio Society was founded in 1947 and produces books of consistently high quality. Some of the earliest books were produced with traditional dustwrappers, but by the mid-1950s, they were almost exclusively issued in slipcases.
Collecting Folio Society Books
Some Folio Society books can be worn, but the slipcase takes the brunt of the wear. Some collectors never read their books; instead, they prefer to read a cheap paperback. Others do read their books, but they usually treat them with care and keep them in pristine condition.
Some collectors seek out the first 100 folio books, which can be found for a reasonable price, while others seek out uniform sets by various authors, such as Anthony Trollope’s ‘Trollope’ series. Folio Society books are illustrated by some of the best book artists of their time, including Salvador Dali, Charles Keeping, and Mervyn Peake. The ‘Lord of the Rings’ set from 1977 is very popular.
This comprehensive bibliography includes full bibliographic details for everything the society has published, as well as all the reprints and variations of books that have appeared over the years.
