How I failed to write a bestselling book
My third book, The In-Between, was a good book, but it ended up being my worst-selling book. Not only was it not a bestseller; it was a colossal flop, and I had no idea why. My fourth book, The Art of Work, sold 15,000 pre-orders before it even came out, landing it on the Washington Post, Publisher’s Weekly, and USATODAY bestsellers lists.

The term “bestseller” has several meanings: it used to refer to a book that sold better than most others; today, it refers to a book that has appeared on one of the major bestseller lists (there are also monthly lists), but authors and publishers are more interested in the weekly ones.

There’s no shortage of people telling you what it takes to write a bestselling book these days. But before you launch a bestseller, you have to write one. This is the polar opposite of the advice given by gurus today. It’s not enough to be an author simply by writing a book. The average book sells a few hundred copies in its first year and then fades away.
How to write a bestseller
Bestsellers are built on a big idea. A small idea for a book results in small sales. The book needs to be written in a way that it can be easily shared and talked about. It should touch on some universal theme. Don’t just write a book for yourself. Bestsellers are packaged to sell. Title, cover, and design are all optimized to help the message spread.
