Nothing But Comics took a sample of comics from various publishers to a U.S. Post Office to examine the weight of the various comic books, which revealed some interesting information about the comics.
Avatar Press
Avatar Press produces the heaviest comics in our survey, with an average weight of 2.7 ounces, implying that the publisher uses heavier paper or other materials in its comics than other publishers, and exceeding the average comic book weight of other publishers who also print 18-page comics.
Boom! Studios
The comics published by Boom! Studios are 16 pages long and weigh 2.2 ounces on average.
Dark Horse Comics
Dark Horse Comics publishes 16-page comic books with an average weight of 2.2 ounces; B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #127 (16 pages) weighs 2.3 ounces, while Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10 #7 is lighter than some of the show’s more popular characters.
DC Comics
Even though the publisher’s comics contain 18 pages, the average weight of a DC comic book is 1.8 ounces, with the New 52 Futures End #45 (18 pages) weighing just over 1.9 ounces.
Dynamite Entertainment
King: Jungle Jim, Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician, and Man of the Atom are among the characters featured in Dynamite Entertainment’s comics, which have an average weight of 1.9 ounces and contain 18 pages.
IDW Publishing
IDW comic books are 2.5 ounces on average, and they have fewer pages (16 pages) than Avatar Press comic books (18 pages). Star Trek/Planet of the Apes: The Primate Directive #1 is the heaviest of the 16 page comic books.
Image Comics
Image Comics’ comic books average 16 pages and 2.3 ounces in weight, with Saga #24 (16 pages) being slightly heavier than any other book in our survey and East of West #18 being the lightest at 2.2 ounces.
Marvel Comics
Marvel Comics’ comic books have 16 pages and an average weight of 1.9 ounces, making them slightly heavier than DC Comics’ comics, despite the fact that Marvel’s comics have fewer pages.
Valiant Entertainment
The average weight of all the comic books in our survey was 2.2 ounces, with three of the four 18-page publishers weighing less than two ounces and four of the five 16-page publishers weighing more than three ounces.
