Libby
Lubby is a reading app for Android, iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch), and Windows 10 devices that allows you to borrow digital books and audiobooks. Borrowed titles appear on your Shelf and are automatically downloaded to the Libby app.
Checking Out
The lending period for an eBook or eAudiobook is 21 days, and you can check out up to 25 titles at once. Kindle Books checked out from the public library are not compatible with Audible. PDF eBooks are not supported by the OverDrive app.
Kindle Books
OverDrive eBooks can also be read on all Kindle devices or by using the free Kindle apps available for Windows/OS, iPhone/iPad (iOS), Android, and other mobile devices using the Libby app.
Placing Holds
If another patron has already checked out a digital title, you can place a hold on it and have it redelivered up to 180 days later.
Renewing
How do I renew my title? The option to renew a title becomes available three days before it is set to expire, and renewing puts you in line to borrow a title once your first checkout expires. For more information on how to renew, please click here.
Returning Titles Early
Although it is not necessary to return an eBook or eAudiobook early, you may do so if you prefer. To return Kindle formatted eBooks, go to the Manage Your Kindle section of the Amazon.com site.
Adobe Digital Editions
To access eBooks borrowed from the library, you’ll need the OverDrive or Libby app, and if you’re using a Mac, you’ll need Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) software installed.
Technical Requirements
OverDrive is a free service that allows you to check out and download eBooks from the San Francisco Public Library. OverDrive eBooks can be read on most eBook readers, smartphones, and tablets that support the EPUB format, and Mac users can listen to audiobooks in their web browser.
Service Alert for macOS Users:
OverDrive has reversed its decision to remove the download option for MP3 audiobooks on Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) through 10.14 (Mojave) computers, and the download option should be restored by October 2, 2019. Until then, you can use the Firefox browser as a workaround.

You can borrow titles from any library if you have a library card for it, and your library may have a partnership with another library or consortium that allows you to borrow titles from the partner’s collection using your regular library card.
How do I recommend a book on OverDrive?
Look for a Not owned banner and Recommend link to tell which titles aren’t part of your library’s digital collection. Click or tap Recommend to recommend a title. If prompted, sign into your library.
Can you rent ebooks from library?
