How Many Books Does the Average Person Read?
In 2015, about 72 percent of American adults read a book, down from 79 percent in 2011. The most frequently reported number was four books per year, and depending on who you ask, certain groups are more or less likely to read than the country as a whole.
Educated, affluent women read the most.
In a 12-month period, the average American woman reads 14 books, while the average American man reads 9. Readership increased with education and income for both genders: 90% of college graduates read at least one book per year, compared to 34% of those who have not completed high school.
Older people read less.
According to the National Institute on Literacy and the Bibliotecnolinguistics, 80 percent of 18u201329-year-olds reported reading at least one book, compared to 69 percent of seniors (65). People tend to read less as they age.
Americans don’t read as much as most other countries.
Americans spend slightly more than half as much time reading as their Indian counterparts, as shown in the map below, with Indians spending the most time between pages, followed by Thais and Chinese. Americans are slackers in comparison to the rest of the world’s population.
