Bestseller
A bestseller is a book or other media that has achieved top sales status, as measured by lists published by newspapers, magazines, and book store chains. In the United States, well-known bestseller lists include Publishers Weekly, USA Today, and The New York Times.
Early best sellers
The term “best seller” was first recorded in print in 1889 in Kansas City, Missouri, when it was coined by The Kansas Times, a local newspaper.
Description and types of bestseller
Bestsellers are usually divided into fiction and non-fiction categories, with a third category, trade paperback bestsellers, on some lists. A hardcover book with sales ranging from 4,000 to 25,000 copies per week could be considered a “bestseller.”
Differences among lists
The Amazon.com list tends to favor hardcover, more expensive books, whereas a book that might be buried on the Indie bestseller list could be positioned very well on The New York Times hardcover advice list.
Verifiability
The New York Times’ bestseller lists may conflict with reports from companies like Amazon.com, which switched its chart data from manual reports filed by stores to automated cash register data in 1991, and many lists now come from automated sources.
The making of a bestseller
A bestseller is defined as a book that has a large number of buyers, and there is a distinct “making of” process that determines which books have the potential to achieve that status. Not all publishers rely on, or strive for, bestsellers, as evidenced by the survival of small presses. In 1995, the authors of a book called The Discipline of Market Leaders colluded to manipulate their book onto the best seller charts.
Unread bestsellers
The New Republic placed coupons redeemable for $5 cash inside 70 books that were selling well in 1985, but none of them were sent in, and the coupons were never used, according to critics.
Major publishers
Bertelsmann and Penguin Group are the two major shareholders in Penguin Random House, which was founded in April 2013 to become the world’s largest publisher. Other major publishers include Thomson Reuters, Reed Elsevier, Wolters Kluwer, Hachette, McGraw Hill Financial, and John Wiley and Sons.
Cultural role
The term “bestseller” has taken on its own popular meaning, independent of empirical data; a book becomes a bestseller primarily because an “authoritative” source declares it to be so. The marketing term “underground bestseller” emphasizes the term’s self-definition.
