why are some epub files so big? – MobileRead Forums
Why are some epub files so large? Let’s say I have an epub book open in front of me with 10 photos (thumbnail size or slightly larger, – 15 KB each, the cover is 40 KB) and 800 pages.
A book of this size would be around 700 KB, but it’s almost four times as large. I have 495 fonts in my Windows folder, with 30 of them ranging in size from one megabyte to *thirty* megabytes, with Toledo-regular being the smallest non-decorative serif font at 50 KB.
When I come across a fat epub, I convert it to mobi and then back to epub. It’s not an elegant solution, but it works. Multiple conversions may result in funny formatting or other unintended changes. The average book is 2 MB, but some are even 4-16 MB. Some epubs are also heavy, depending on the formatting, but the ones from Amazon are way heavier.
