Bibliophilia
“Bookworm” redirects here; for other uses, see Bookworm (disambiguation). Bibliophilia, also known as bibliophilism, is the love of books, and a bibliophile is someone who enjoys and reads books frequently.
Profile
The classic bibliophile is someone who enjoys reading, admiring, and collecting books. “Bibliophile” is an apt term for a small group of book collectors who have books they adore or hold special value, as well as old editions with unusual bindings.
Usage of the term
Bibliophilia is not to be confused with bibliomania, a symptom of obsessiveu2013compulsive disorder characterized by excessive book collecting to the point where interpersonal relationships or health are jeopardized. The Library of Congress does not use the term “bibliophily,” instead referring to its readers as either book collectors or bibliomaniacs.
History
Lord Spencer and the Marquess of Blandford were noted bibliophiles, and J. P. Morgan paid $24,750 for a 1459 edition of the Mainz Psalter in 1884.

Notes
The term “bookworm” is often used as a metaphor to describe a voracious reader, an indiscriminate reader, or a bibliophile; it originally had a negative connotation, e.g., an idler who read instead of working.
