Fear Street is a teen horror fiction series written by R. L. Stine that began in 1989 and ended in 1999 with the publication of the Fear Street Seniors spin-off. Fear Street has sold over 80 million copies as of 2010[update].
Setting
The Fear Street books are set in the fictionalized town of Shadyside, and some of them contain paranormal elements such as ghosts, while others are simply murder mysteries set in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The plot of the books takes place between the late 1980s and early 1990s, with multiple novels set in the same year.
Release
After a hiatus, R. L. Stine revived the Fear Street book series in October 2014. The first Fear Street book, The New Girl, was published in 1989, and various spin-off series, such as the Fear Street Sagas and Ghosts of Fear Street, were written.
Television
On July 31, 1998, ABC Television aired the pilot episode for the unproduced Fear Street television series, titled Ghosts of Fear Street, which received 89% of men 18-34 lead-ins but only 55% of women 18-34 lead-ins.
Film
The Fear Street trilogy has been acquired by Netflix for a mid-2021 release date, with Kiana Madeira and Olivia Welch starring as the lead characters. The series’ future had been uncertain after Chernin Entertainment’s production deal with 20th Century Fox was terminated.
