Different traditions count and order the books differently, but we’ve presented them here in the order used in most mainline Protestant Bibles, which is the most common variety in the United States.
The Hebrew Scriptures & The Old Testament
Different Christian traditions recognize different books of the Bible as canonical, and some books are Apocrypha or Deuterocanonical, which means they are less canonical than the primary canon.
The Five Books of Moses/the Pentateuch
The Torah or Pentateuch is the only set of books included in all forms of the Tanakh and the Old Testament, in the same order, and is the first and arguably most important books in the scripture.
An Overview of the Old and New Testaments
The Old Testament tells the story of how the world was created and how God anointed his chosen people; the various books of the Old Testament relate the Israelites’ trials as they endure centuries of enslavement; and the New Testament tells the story of Jesus Christ’s life and teachings.

The Bible uses the terms “Hebrew,” “Jew,” and “Israelite” interchangeably, with Hebrew referring to descendants of Abraham and Jew referring to members of the Jewish community.

The Tetragrammaton, or four letters, are used to identify God in the Tanakh, and they are to be treated with extreme reverence; you should not erase or damage them. Because you shouldn’t write the name down too often, it’s common to change a letter or space them out.

Why are books missing from the Bible?
